23. Cantarane Bastion
The Cantarane Bastion is the southernmost of the bastions of the Venetian fortress of Peschiera del Garda. It was built in 1551, shortly after the completion of the Feltrin Bastion, the first of the entire defensive complex. Its grandeur can be appreciated by walking or cycling along the path that runs alongside the walls.
On the façade of the Cantarane Bastion, the marks left by bombings during the Second World War are still visible. These attacks caused the destruction of the railway bridge known as “Sette Ponti“, which had been built during the Habsburg period.
Before being demolished, the Sette Ponti bridge was an engineering work that allowed the passage of both trains and vehicles. A historical photograph of the bridge, taken before its destruction, can be seen at the Museum of Fishing and Local Traditions, located in the square of the former artillery barracks.
