Visit Parco Catullo and the Historic Building in Peschiera del Garda: Where Nature Meets Military History in a Charming Corner of the Fortress

Step into Parco Catullo, a vast green area that represents one of the most peaceful and picturesque spots within the fortress.

During the medieval period, Parco Catullo in Peschiera del Garda was known as Trans Mincio, referring to its location beyond the river. At that time, the park served a very different purpose: it was used for growing vegetables to ensure the daily sustenance of the inhabitants.

As you continue your walk, you’ll come across the Command Building of the Fortress, now also known as the Palazzina Storica. Dating back to 1854, this structure is a fine example of 19th-century military architecture—imposing, yet harmoniously integrated into the natural surroundings. Today, it houses the Museum of the Inter-Allied Conference, commemorating a pivotal event of World War I.

On November 11, 1917, right inside this building, a crucial meeting took place between the top military leaders of the Allied forces.

It was King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy who convened the commanders to address the dire situation following the defeat at Caporetto. Despite the difficulties, he urged the Allies not to retreat, affirming the Italian army’s determination to continue fighting.

Thanks to this meeting, new shared military strategies were defined, significantly contributing to the final victory. Today, the museum hosts documents, photographs, and testimonies related to that historic event.

In addition, the Palazzina Storica hosts numerous art exhibitions every year, both classical and contemporary, drawing artists and visitors from across Italy. It’s a place where historical memory, culture, and architectural beauty come together—set in one of the most evocative corners of the fortified city.
