8. Southern View of the Fortress
Admire the panoramic view of the southern part of the Peschiera del Garda fortress, featuring historic bridges, military architecture, and captivating views.
In front of you opens the view of the bridge that connects the Milan-Venice railway track.
The southern view of the fortress in Peschiera del Garda offers a chance to admire the bridge, rebuilt after the 1944 bombings, which connects the Milan-Venice railway line, constructed during the Austro-Hungarian period. It stands as a symbol of an era marked by infrastructure transformations. This railway connection passes through the historic area of the fortress, representing an important link between the past and the present.
If you look carefully, as indicated in the explanatory diagram, you can spot the remains of the Regio Stabilimento Ittiogenico. This structure, once dedicated to fish production and management, was completely destroyed during World War II. The bombings severely affected the entire area, wiping out significant buildings and altering the urban landscape.
A little further, you can see the rear side of the Ponte dei Voltoni, with its characteristic masonry arches.
It remains one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks of the fortifications, still clearly visible from this panoramic spot. In the distance, the Bastione Cantarane stands out, marking the far end of the fortress.
Now, slowly descend from Bastione San Marco and gradually approach Porta Verona. Before entering, take a moment to pause and enjoy the southern view — from here, the landscape opens up into a breathtaking scene. This is one of the most picturesque spots in the entire fortification complex, where the eye takes in the structure, the water, and the details that tell centuries of history.
