Madonna del Frassino Sanctuary

The Sanctuary was built in September 1511, when Peschiera was subjected to the French power. The Sanctuary was subject to frequent devastation and ruins, therefore it was carefully restored numerous times, to bring it back to its original splendor. The interior, which is characterized by a single nave, embellished with 8 altars and 2 chapels, houses the miraculous statue of Mary, which in May 1950 appeared to the farmer Bortolomeo Broglia, followed by other works by Paolo Farinati and Andrea Bertanza.

St. Martino Bishop Church

The Church of St. Martino Bishop is located in the historic center of Peschiera del Garda and is one of the oldest places of worship in the Diocese of Verona. The first evidence dates back to 1008, then it bacame  the parish church of the Municipality in 1454. In 1812 Napoleon Bonaparte transformed it into a military warehouse and a hospital. Two years later it was demolished cause of its unsafe conditions. On its place was built the current building, around the 1820s.

Maguzzano Abbey

This historical spiritual place with an important artistic value, is guarded and cared for by friars, who give to the environment an air of serenity and peace. The church, the Renaissance cloister and the huge garden can be visited every Sunday afternoon, by reservation for groups. Furthermore, from the abbey it is possible to enjoy a wonderful view of the lake, the surrounding fields and vineyards.

St. Pietro in Mavino Church

It was built on Mavino hill  starting from the 7th century. It is characterized by a rectangular plan, which over the centuries has been enlarged on the space once reserved for the church cemetery. Its details, such as the material of the walls, the bell tower and the frescoes, bear witness to the fact that the construction took place in different and subsequent centuries. The church, which was subjected to numerous renovations,  was partially rebuilt and raised in 1320.

One of its peculiarity is the presence of the Julia Bell, in memory of the fallen people during the World Wars.

Dome of Salò

The church is dedicated to Santa Maria Annunziata and was rebuilt on an older building between 1453 and 1502. The structure of the bell tower, that of the windows with terracotta frames on the right side and the Sala del Capitolo characterized by frescoes, remain from the previous building of the 15th century.

Outside, the façade is simple even if incomplete, in uncoated terracotta and embellished with a marble portal that overlooks the small square in front.

The interior with three naves and a Gothic-Renaissance style, is rich in works by Zenon Veronese, Palma the Younger, Andrea Celesti and Romanino. In addition, it has two small chapels at the end of the side naves.

Parish Church of St. Felice

The Parish Church of San Felice, is dedicated to: St. Felice, St. Adauto and St. Flavia, whose relics are now kept inside the main altar, above which stands out an altarpiece realised by Romanino. The church was built by the famous Brescian architect Antonio Corbellini (1781). The design of the new parish church, in Baroque style, was presented in July 1740 by the nobleman Innocenzo Moniga and the provost Matteo Alberini.

Basilica of St. John

Construction began in 1339 and ended in 1780 with the project of the architect Lonatese Paolo Soratini. With its majestic dome it is the unmistakable symbol of the city. In the dome eight rounds represent scenes from the Old and New Testament, by Giosuè Scotti.

Valuable works kept inside the basilica are the side altars, the choir in the apse and the tabernacle of the sixteenth century, placed on the altar of the Blessed Sacrament. Very beautiful are the two monumental fonts in white and yellow marble, surmounted by the statues of San Giovanni and San Zeno and the stupendous tub of the Baptistery that complete the rich furnishings of the Basilica.

Church of St. Maria in Valtenesi

It represents the Mother Church of all those of Valtenesi, to which all the churches in the area turned in the Middle Ages for the sacraments, it is also known by the name of Pieve Vecchia. It was a parish church until the mid-eighteenth century, when it risked being demolished to contribute its stones to the construction of the new parish church of St. Maria Assunta of Solarolo. To this new religious building, the ancient Pieve transferred the dedication to the Virgin, witnessed by the precious wooden statue of the Virgin, dating back to the fifteenth century, now preserved in the church of St. Maria Assunta, a symbol of continuity of faith and traditions.

Outside, the façade is divided into a main volume, corresponding to the central nave and in the bodies corresponding to the side aisles, which are lower and slightly set back. Inside, the building has three naves, which end with three apses and there are also some fragments of frescoes dating back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

The church underwent some interventions in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, while the bell tower raised in front of the facade dates back to the mid-sixteenth century.

Church of S. Nicolò

The Originals of Lazise built this church in the 12th century and dedicated it to S. Nicolò da Bari, protector of sailors. Originally the apse was semicircular in shape, all freshly decorated. In 1595 the confraternity of the Discipline demolished it to build the current quadrangular shape. It was on this occasion that the Municipality, as a sign of its patronage, ordered that the emblem and the initials C.L. MDXCV.

Between the church and the port there was a porch-shaped atrium under which the goods were unloaded and notarial deeds were devised, forming a unicum with the commercial activities of the nearby Customs. The porch was demolished in 1792 because it had become a shelter for animals, fishing nets and public dormitory.

Sanctuary of the Carmine

A few steps from the town, on a hill, stands the ancient Sanctuary of the Carmine, an imposing 15th century building, frescoed inside and destination of many pilgrims. In the Sanctuary of the Carmine the feast of the Madonna of Carmine is celebrated, with recurrence on July 16th. Today, after more than five centuries, the embellished and enlarged Sanctuary continues to be a place of prayer for many faithful from Italy and beyond. Originally, the chapel was built in 1452 by the Feliciani, dedicated to the Madonna of Cisterns due to the presence of water sources in the area. Over the years, this small chapel underwent several interventions, was enlarged and changed its name several times, coming to be called Madonna of Carmine, after the arrival of the Carmelite Fathers in 1460.

After the Second World War the church was restructured and subsequently the Carmelite Fathers took possession of both the Church and the remains of the convent.

Daniele Comboni Missionary Center

Daniele Comboni was born in Limone and he was a great man, whose missionary work was recognized with his beatification in 1996 and his canonization in 2003. At the Comboni Center of Tesöl, located in the homonymous lemon-grove and surrounded by a large park, it is possible to visit the birthplace of Comboni, the small church, the "Museum of Curiosities", the multimedia itinerary and the adjacent exposition.

Church of St. Andrew

The Church of St. Andrew was built at the beginning of the 12th century, in Romanesque-Lombard style, on the ruins of a pagan temple dedicated to Apollo. The Cardinal St. Charles Borromeo changed the original aspect of the building, both outside and inside, in order to demolish the symbols considered pagan.

Outside, the facade made of polychrome marble, houses an arched portal, decorated with a lunette, which depicts the Virgin with Child and some saints. The interior is characterized by three naves marked by square based pillars decorated with valuable capitals, which represent a wide range of typically Romanesque figurative motifs and themes.

The Crypt, which once kept the relics of St. Ercolano, was closed by St. Charles Borromeo in 1580 and remained closed for almost four hundred years, until the Superintendence of Fine Arts of Brescia decided to have it reopened in 1962. Today it is possible to observe the sarcophagus, which originally contained the remains of St. Ercolano, which were transferred to the new Parish Church in 1825.

Cathedral of Desenzano

It is the main church of Desenzano, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. It was built between 1586 and 1611 on the remains of an ancient parish church, by the project of the architect Giulio Todeschini. The outside appears with a baroque facade, whereas the interior is characterised by three naves.

Inside, stand out the works of Andrea Celesti, among them the "Resurrection" and a pictorial cycle dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene.

Madonna della Scoperta Sanctuary

It is located on the border of the territory of Lonato, near Desenzano del Garda, this small sanctuary is linked to the events of the Battle of Solferino and San Martino on the 24th of June 1859. It is a place full of charm, welcoming and with a strong spirituality.

The curious name derives from the fact that a perfectly preserved painting depicting the Virgin was found here, this was considered a miraculous episode by many, so much so that the 17th century church was transformed into a sanctuary.

House of St. Angela Merici

In the locality of Le Grezze stands the house of Saint Angela Merici, to whom we owe the foundation of the Ursuline Order in 1535. Angela Merici was born in Desenzano in 1474 from a poor peasant family and joined the Franciscan Tertiaries when she was very young. The building has undergone several changes over time, nevertheless the old kitchen and the bedroom are still recognizable. According to tradition, the Saint had the premonitory vision of the future foundation of the Company of S. Orsola, where now stands the Mericianum, which is a large natural park, an oasis of peace and silence, place of spiritual exercises. Since 1962 she has been the saint patron of Desenzano del Garda.

Chiesa San Zeno Maggiore

San Zeno is the basilica dedicated to the patron saint of Verona. The original nucleus dating back to the 4th century, reached its present form in the X-XI, following numerous interventions. On the facade, in the middle, there is a rose called the Wheel of Fortune that depicts the alternate human events: the man on the throne, which then falls, continually crushed by the misfortune and then resumes and goes on creating the Wheel of Fortune. The protium, adorned with sculptural decorations, at the bottom is supported by two columns resting on lions, church guardians. The portal is an authentic masterpiece, consisting of 48 square bronze figures, 24 per leaf, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Old Testament. Also worthy of note are the bas-reliefs located at the sides of the portal with sacred and profane subjects concerning King Teodorico. The whole basilica is subdivided into three levels of height, from below: the Crypt, the central part, and the Presbytery. In the Crypt is guarded the body of the saint, inside a sarcophagus at sight. The central part is three naves, bordered by powerful crown-shaped pillars alternating with Corinthian columns. The Presbytery, accessible through two staircases, houses one of the illustrious masterpieces of Andrea Mantegna, the Pala di San Zeno.

The square

Piazza San Zeno is actually a Roman-era place outside the city walls of the same era. Place of origin of Christianity of the city was born with the creation of the basilica and the monastery of San Zeno in the 9th century. In the same area there is a small church dedicated to San Procolo (V century) and therefore older than the basilica. The basilica was enlarged in the 13th century and a tower for the abbey was built at its side.
